Telefónica I+D, Spanish Main Telecommunications Company, will present the strategy plan based on the usage of Open Source technology

Antonio Castillo, Business Development General Manager of Telefónica-I+D, has confirmed attendance to The Open Source World Conference held in Malaga the 18th, 19th and 20th of February 2004. Where he will presents the Company plans to implement open source technologies.

On the 19th at 9:30 am, Mr. Castillo will attend a key lecture where he will presents the strategies of the most important Companies concerning Open Source and The Telefónica-I+D Department Strategy to implement Open Source Technologies.

Antonio Castillo has a PhD as Engineer of Telecommunications and since 1974 he has develop his professional career at The Telefónica Company, from his start as part of the I+D (Research and Development) Department to his actual position as Business Development General Manager of Telefónica-I+D.

Mr. Castillo was from 1985 to 1991 the president of the Strategy Guidelines Group at the Telecommunications European Conference and from 1986 to 1990 the representative of Spanish Government in the Board of Management at the European Commission Esprit. He was in 1993 formal elected President of the del European Telecommunications Systematization Institute (ETSI) position he had until November 1998.

Antonio Castillo is a Professor on leave of absence at the Universidad Politécnica of Madrid.

Telefónica is the biggest Spanish Company on the communication market and the I+D (Research and Development) Department has a long trajectory on the usage and implementation of open source technologies. The Company Telecommunications Services and Products and Information Systems Projects are involved with Open Source technologies. And within the developments the usage of free code products such as Apache, jboss, or sendmail is very common.

The usage of Open Source by Telefónica was set up to the very concrete and studied real case. But in 2003 the Company creates within their innovation strategy plan a project for the study of open source methodologies and technologies.

According to the company: The results of this study shows the straight and firm benefits of open source technologies, and also it shows the acceptance and implementation by market tendencies.

Telefónica I+D Strategy Plan for the 2004-2007 period seeks to anticipate " The supremacy of Open Source technologies, Open Source Methodologies, and Business Plans based on Open Source". This strategy will achieve an important technological leadership and the improvement of their client’s business value.
